Tatiana Belonogoff added a British Summer Championships gold medal to the European title she won in Helsinki earlier this month.

The Guildford City swimmer claimed Britain’s first gold medal of the recent European Junior Championships in the 50m breaststroke, and she was in equally dominant form during day one in Sheffield yesterday.

Belonogoff won 17/18 Yrs gold at Ponds Forge in 31.67, just fending off the challenge from her Great Britain team mate Katie Robertson by 0.10 seconds. It is the third time in a row Belonogoff has won this British title.

Craig Benson swam a new personal best of 59.50 to win gold in the men’s 19/Over 100m breaststroke final, while Laura Stephens set a new PB of 4:48.77 to win the women’s 19/Over 400m individual medley.

Paralympic silver medallist Tom Hamer successfully defended his British Summer Championships title in the men’s MC 200m freestyle, scoring a points total of 932 in 1:59.91. Norwich swimmer Jessica-Jane Applegate won the women’s MC 200m freestyle in 2:07.67 for 874 points.

The MC 400m freestyle finals were won by Lewis White in 4:22.63 (882 points) and Grace Harvey in 5:29.66 (870 points).

Elsewhere on day one in Sheffield, Dartmoor Darts swimmer Cameron Williams set a new British 13/14 Yrs record in the 100m breaststroke. Williams set his new British best of 1:05.06 in the morning heats. He returned to the pool for the afternoon session to swim 1.05.37 and win the final by more than a second from Portsmouth’s Oliver Kettle.
