Olivia Smoliga played a starring role as the USA dominated the 2018 FINA Short Course World Swimming Championships in China.

Smoliga claimed an unprecedented eight gold medals at the SC Worlds, which was held across six days in Hangzhou, surpassing the seven golds won by American team mate Caeleb Dressel in Budapest last year.

In addition to victories in the 50m and 100m backstroke, Smoliga was part of the USA’s victorious relay teams in the women’s 4x50m and 4x100m freestyle, along with the 4x50m and 4×100 medley.

She also claimed gold in the two mixed relays for a USA squad that was unsurprisingly named as the Team of the Championships.

Smoliga is part of Team FINIS and races in the FINIS Rival, a tech suit which she has helped to develop alongside British swimmer James Guy.

Fellow USA swimmer Kelsi Dahlia went one better in China with nine medals, but with one gold less than Smoliga. Dahlia’s haul was completed with a silver and a bronze.

Individually, it was South Africa’s Chad Le Clos and Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu who were named as best male and best female in China.

Hosszu claimed four golds, with a victory in the 200m butterfly backing up a clean sweep of the women’s medley events.

Meanwhile, Le Clos won gold in the 100m fly, silver in the 50m and 200m fly, and bronze in the 100m free as part of his four-medal haul.

There were nine new world records set during the six days of competition in Hangzhou, including six in the relays (five for the dominant USA team, and one for Brazil).

In individual action, Australia’s Ariarne Titmus set a new world’s best of 3:53.92 in the women’s 400m free, Russian Kirill Prigoda swam 2:00.16 in the men’s 200m breaststroke, and Japan’s Daiya Seto clocked 1:48.24 in the men’s 200m butterfly.
