Ben Proud swam the fourth fastest 50m freestyle of all time to claim a stunning win at the 2018 Sette Colli Trophy in Italy this weekend.

Proud’s winning time of 21.16 on the opening night was a double record-breaker, not only improving on his British best of 21.30 but also smashing Ashley Callus’ Commonwealth record from 2009.

The British swimmer’s pace was far too hot for Brazilian Bruno Fratus, who was second in 21.77. Italian Andrea Vergani was third in 22.21.

It took a new world record to deny Proud a Sette Colli double in the men’s 50m butterfly on day three. Ukranian Andriy Govorov, who came so close to breaking Rafael Munoz’s 2009 world record on 22.43 in the Mare Nostrum Series a fortnight ago, finally achieved it on Sunday night with a blistering time of 22.27.

Proud came home in second with a season-best time of 22.93, while Dutch swimmer Mathys Goosen was third in 23.55.

Adam Peaty continued his breaststroke domination over 50m and 100m, doing the double with another two impressive swims.

Peaty’s winning time of 26.41 in the 50m was the fastest time this year, bettering the 26.49 he swam at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in April. The time also broke his own meet record by two tenths of a second.

Over 100m, Peaty again set a meet record to win in 58.61, thanks in no small part to a ferocious 27.06 opening split that proved too tough for Arno Kamminga in second and Fabio Scozzoli in third. Peaty’s fellow Brit James Wilby was fourth in 1:00.01.

Holly Hibbott claimed another gold for Britain in the women’s 400m freestyle, posting a winning time of 4:09.78,

James Guy locked horns again with Chad le Clos in the men’s 100m butterfly, where the result went the same way as their Commonwealth Games battle in April. Le Clos set a meet record of 51.24 to edge out Guy by two tenths.

Guy also claimed a third place finish with 1:56.88 in the 200m butterfly, behind Altamir Luiz Melo (1:55.83) and Tamas Kenderesi (1:56.72), as well as a fourth in the 200m freestyle (1:47.98).

Elsewhere for the British squad, there were second places for Siobhan-Marie O’Connor in the 100m breaststroke (1:07.40), Aimee Willmott in the 400m IM (4:38.81), Imogen Clark in the 50m breaststroke (30.60), Jessica Fullalove in the 200m backstroke (2:11.16), Molly Renshaw in the 200m breaststroke (2:25.66) and Max Litchfield in the men’s 200m IM (1:59.68).

Katherine Greenslade joined Fullalove on the podium by finishing third in the 200m backstroke (2:12.23), while Chloe Tutton was just behind Renshaw to take third in the 200m breaststroke (2:25.97). Georgia Davies was third in the 50m backstroke (27.95), and Alys Thomas took bronze in the 200m butterfly (2:08.26).

Luke Greenbank swam a time of 1:59.05 to finish third in the men’s 200m backstroke, but just missed out on another podium when he had to settle for fourth in the 100m backstroke (54.93).

At the end of the three-day meet, the British team were tied with Hungary on 54.00 points, and were second only to Italy in the Mario Saini Trophy national team rankings.

Head coach Bill Furniss said it was mission accomplished at the meeting, in terms of putting the finishing touches on preparation for the 2018 European Championships next month.

Furniss said: “We’re pleased with the competitiveness of the team – we raced hard and fulfilled our objectives for the meet. We can now focus on Glasgow knowing we’re in a good place.”
