Tom Dean has been crowned European Junior Champion in the men’s 200m individual medley after a stunning swim in Helsinki this afternoon.
Dean won Great Britain’s third gold medal of the 2018 European Junior Swimming Championships in dominant fashion, leading the rest of the field home by more than two seconds.
Dean’s winning time of 1:59.17 was a personal best, topping his first ever sub-two-minute swim at Edinburgh earlier this year when he won his first senior British title. It was also a competition best time, helping Dean retain the title he won in Israel last year.
Russia occupied both minor podium positions, with Maksim Stupin taking silver in 2:01.42 and Danil Zaytsev landing bronze in 2:02.42.
Straight after Dean’s success, Lauren Cox bagged Britain’s second medal of the day with a silver in the 50m backstroke. She finished in 28.51, behind Russia’s Daria Vaskina (27.90).
The session ended in victorious fashion too, with the women’s 4x100m medley relay team picking up the second gold of the day for Great Britain. The team of Lily Boseley, Tatiana Belonogoff, Emily Large and Freya Anderson won in 4:02.48, beating Russia and Germany to the top of the podium. This success marked a second gold of the championships for Belonogoff and Anderson.
In the previous relay, Britain’s men’s 4x200m freestyle team bagged a bronze. The team of Harry Constantine, Jakob Goodman, Tom Dean and Luke Turley finished third in 7:17.73, behind winners Israel and runners-up Russia.
Jacob Peters just missed out on a medal for Great Britain in the first of this afternoon’s finals, finishing fourth in the men’s 200m butterfly. Peters was in the bronze medal position after the first 50m, but was passed by Ukraine’s Denys Kesil who went on to claim the final podium spot. Hungary’s Kristof Milak was the runaway winner in 1:53.94. Italy’s Federico Burdisso was second in 1:56.40, ahead of Kesil in 1:56.45 and Peters in 1:57.83.
Lily Booker reached this afternoon’s women’s 200m breaststroke final, where she swam a time of 2:30.54 to finish eighth.
Archie Goodburn won his men’s 50m breaststroke semi-final in 28.34 to advance to the final later in the afternoon, where he finished fifth in 28.30.
In the women’s 50m backstroke, Lauren Cox qualified for the final after finishing third in the second semi-final. Her time was 28.71. Lily Boseley was fifth in the other semi, with her time of 29.13 earning her the reserve spot.
Rachel Anderson and Laura McNab had both reached the semi-finals of the women’s 200m freestyle, but neither were able to advance after a seventh for Anderson (2:03.61) and an eighth for McNab (2:04.11).
Keanna Macinnes qualified for the final of the women’s 100m butterfly after swimming a time of 1:00.63 to finish third in this afternoon’s first semi-final. Emily Large was the only swimmer in the women’s 100m butterfly to go under one minute, which she did in both the preliminaries and the semi-finals.
Large won her morning heat in 59.54, and went even better in her semi to win in 59.16. There was confusion immediately after the race with a disqualification showing on the timing system, however her winning time was quickly reinstated.
