Freya Anderson has been crowned European champion in the 100m freestyle at the 2018 European Junior Swimming Championships in Helsinki this afternoon.
Anderson, competing in her final competition as a junior, swam a time of 54.65 to win by 0.66 from Russia’s Elizaveta Klevanovich. Turkey’s Selen Ozbilen took bronze in 55.69.
The 17-year-old British swimmer, who has overcome a difficult year of injuries, is one of five GB swimmers who will also be swimming at the Glasgow 2018 Europeans next month.
Britain also claimed two medals in the opening three finals of this afternoon’s session in Finland.
Ciara Schlosshan took a silver medal in the women’s 200m butterfly, while Nick Pyle claimed a bronze in the men’s 100m backstroke.
Schlosshan and her fellow British swimmer Keanna Macinnes both made stunning starts in their final, and were one and two at the 50m mark.
Macinnes, who led by a fraction, eventually dropped back to eighth in 2:14.71, but Schlosshan kept with Hungary’s Blanka Berecz and touched second in 2:11.18. The winning time from Berecz was 2:10.06.
Pyle’s bronze came in a dramatic opening race this afternoon. His time of 54.69 was good enough for third place, but the real drama happened in front of him as Kliment Kolesnikov and Daniel-Cristian Martin were inseparable as both touched the wall in 53.52.
Leah Crisp took four seconds off her qualifying time to finish sixth in the final of the women’s 400m freestyle. Crisp swam a time of 4:14.78. The gold medal went to Hungary’s Ajna Kesely in a dominant 4:05.89.
Meanwhile, Tom Dean has qualified for the final of the men’s 200m individual medley. He went in heat two and finished second in 2:01.72, behind Russian Maksim Stupin’s winning time of 2:00.42. Both those times were quicker than any posted in the first semi-final. Another Brit in that second semi was Charlie Hutchinson, who finished eighth in 2:05.76.
Harry Constantine finished seventh in the second of the men’s 100m freestyle semi-finals, in a time of 50.75.
Jacob Peters finished third in the second semi-final of the men’s 200m butterfly. His time of 1:58.60 sees him comfortably through to tomorrow’s final.
Peters finished behind heat winner Denis Kesil (1:57.94) and Federico Burdisso (1:58.26). All three swimmers posted times faster than the winner of the first semi-final, Hungary’s Kristof Milak (1:58.65). Peters’ fellow Brit Archie Goodburn finished eighth in semi-final two, with a time of 2:02.14.
Lily Booker will swim in tomorrow’s women’s 200m breaststroke final after qualifying from her second semi-final this afternoon. Booker was fifth in a time of 2:29.02, while Charlotte Rigg was eighth in the first semi in 2:32.26.
In the men’s 1500m freestyle, Nathan Hughes finished seventh in 15:24.81 and William Bell was 17th in 15:47.57.
