Adam Peaty completed his 50m and 100m breaststroke double for the third successive European Championships at Glasgow this afternoon.

Having already won the 100m gold medal with a world record swim at the weekend, Peaty returned to set a new championship best time of 26.09 to win gold in the 50m breaststroke.

He was 0.70 seconds clear of Italian Fabio Scozzoli, who took silver. Slovenia’s Peter John Stevens claimed the bronze medal in 27.06.

Peaty is now European champion in the 50m and 100m breaststroke as well as in the 4x100m mixed medley. He’s looking to add a fourth gold tomorrow in the men’s medley relay.

He said: “It’s three out of three at the moment and hopefully that streak will continue tomorrow.

“I’m trying to enjoy it, and hopefully I will have a tussle on my hands tomorrow.

“As you get more mature you realise it’s not about managing your time at these meets, it’s about managing your energy. To be consistent in that you have to be mature.”

Also tonight, both Freya Anderson and Siobhan-Marie O’Connor narrowly missed out on bronze medals.

Teenager Anderson, fresh from success at the European Junior Championships in Helsinki last month, gave an extremely good account of herself in the 100m freestyle final to finish fourth in 53.61.

She was just 0.26 seconds away from bronze medallist Charlotte Bonnet, and set a new European junior record. Sarah Sjöström won gold for Sweden in 52.93.

Meanwhile, O’Connor was even closer to a bronze in the 200m individual medley final. She missed out by just 0.02 seconds to Maria Ugolkova of Switzerland.

O’Connor’s final time was 2:10.85. The gold medal was won by Hungarian legend Katinka Hosszu.

Ben Proud looked in good form in his 50m freestyle semi-final, setting a new championship record of 21.11 as he booked his place in the final.

James Guy also advanced in the 100m butterfly semi-finals, with a qualifying time of 51.78.

Imogen Clark broke her own national record in qualifying for the 50m breaststroke final, with a time of 30.04 and said she hoped to become the first British woman under the 30 second barrier.

She said: “I’m so excited for the final – it makes my belly tingle thinking about it, but in a good way.

“I’m used to just doing national events and coming out and it just being my dad shouting for me, so to come out to this, I’m buzzing.”
