Freya Anderson said farewell to swimming’s junior ranks in spectacular style as she was crowned a triple European champion in Helsinki.
Anderson won gold medals in the 50m and 100m freestyle, while also playing a part in the victorious 4x100m medley relay team alongside Lily Boseley, Tatiana Belonogoff and Emily Large.
The 17-year-old also claimed a silver medal as part of Britain’s mixed 4x100m medley team with Large, Nick Pyle and Archie Goodburn, and narrowly missed out on landing a fifth medal in the 50m butterfly.
“The week in Helsinki went way better than I expected,” Anderson told Sky Sports. “I was super happy with my swims and even getting a sneaky gold in the 50 free which I didn’t expect.
“I feel I have finally gained my confidence back after a tough 18 months and it’s made me more motivated to train even harder. And to top it off on the last night I had a really good split on the relay which really boosted my confidence.”
Anderson’s success helped Great Britain to finish third in the final standings, having won six golds, three silvers and four bronze medals.
Large also brought two golds home, becoming European junior champion in the 100m butterfly as well as her relay success.
Britain’s other two European champions are Tatiana Belonogoff in the women’s 50m breaststroke, and Tom Dean in the men’s 200m individual medley.
Dean also picked up bronze medals with a PB swim in the 400m individual medley final, and as part of the 4x200m freestyle relay team alongside Harry Constantine, Jakob Goodman, and Luke Turley.
Anderson, Large, Dean, Pyle and Jacob Peters will now turn their attentions to the Glasgow 2018 European Swimming Championships next month, where they will all compete in senior action.
