15,000 calorie diet fuels Great British Swim

ross edgley great british swim diet

Have you ever wondered what type of diet is needed for a mammoth 2,000-mile open water swim challenge such as Ross Edgley’s Great British Swim?

Edgley is well into the third month of his swim around the coast of mainland Britain, and he’s already covered more than 1,100 miles over the past 70 days.

In the past week, he has passed the Isle of Mull and he’s currently swimming along Scotland’s east coast as he aims for the most northerly point on his route.

But just where is he getting the strength and energy from to be able to get back into the water, day after day?

The 32-year-old strongman says he requires a daily intake of anywhere between 10 and 15,000 calories to be able to keep his energy levels at the required levels – that’s the equivalent of five huge Christmas dinners every day.

Edgley has tried to include as much variety as possible in his diet, which includes:

  • Pasta
  • Shepherd’s Pie
  • Cornish pasties
  • Noodles
  • Porridge
  • Homemade energy gels (custard, curries)

With space limited on his support boat, Edgley explained the importance of stocking up on supplies smartly. He said: “You can’t take thousands of bags of chicken wings, so I have whey protein and, for carbs, nut butters, coconut oil, foods void of texture and taste.”

“As soon as I feel my energy levels dip, I eat. When you’re swimming twice a day, sometimes it is about force feeding yourself.”

Since setting off from Margate on June 1, Edgley has aimed to fit in two six-hour swimming sessions every day. He’s made his way down the English Channel, around the tip of Cornwall and then up past Wales and Ireland.

Suzanne Hobbs is the chef on board the support boat. She added: “I’m stuffing him with around 15,000 calories a day. Ross carries very little fat so I use carbohydrates and easily digested fats.”

Edgley, who is using HUUB wetsuits and accessories during his swim, revealed the most important food for the adventure is the banana.

“You don’t want to get on and off the boat to keep feeding, because even when you’re treading water in the ocean, the current is still pushing you in the right direction,” Edgley explained on his Red Bull vlog.

“You want to eat something that doesn’t have a wrapper and that doesn’t have too much flavour.”
