Swim England National Summer Meet – Day 2

Daniel Jenkins saved his best until very late in the race to win gold in the most exciting race of the second day at the 2018 Swim England National Summer Meet in Sheffield.

The City of Oxford swimmer produced an incredible final 50m to win the 17 Yrs age group final in the men’s 200m freestyle in a time of 1:55.01.

After his third turn, Jenkins was seventh and nearly one-and-a-half seconds behind the leader.

But a stunning late charge saw him overhaul Northampton’s Archie Plowman just in time to touch the wall first, by 0.04 seconds.

Things were even closer in the women’s 15 Yrs 50m freestyle final, where the top five all touched the wall within 0.09 seconds of each other.

City of Leicester’s Samantha Diaz got there first in 27.27 to take the gold medal. Guernsey’s Laura Le Cras claimed silver in 27.28, and Ipswich’s Emma Cruickshanks took the bronze in 27.32.

There was another close finish in the men’s 15 Yrs 200m breaststroke, where the top three were separated by just 0.14 seconds. Royal Wolverhampton School’s Daniel Parsons took the gold medal in 2:31.61, ahead of City of Oxford’s Christopher Sims (2:31.71) and Crawley’s Jamie Scutt (2:31.75).

One of the day’s most dominating performances came in the women’s 200m breaststroke, where KingstonHull swimmer Amy Corcoran led the 16 Yrs final home with nearly three seconds to spare.

Corcoran won in 2:41.36, beating Royal Wolverhampton School’s Katie Hawkins (2:44.33) and City of Manchester Aquatics’ Emma Dickson (2:46.70) to take the gold medal.
